After the Storm: Inspecting Your Atlanta Gutters After Severe Weather

The first 24 hours: safety and obvious damage

In the immediate aftermath of any significant weather event, the priority is safety. A few things to wait on before any close inspection:

  • Wait for the weather to fully pass. Don’t walk the property during active lightning or while wind is still gusting. The damage that’s already done isn’t going to get worse in another hour.
  • Check for downed power lines first. If a tree limb has fallen across power lines or pulled service wires loose, that takes precedence over everything else. Stay clear and call the utility.
  • Walk the perimeter from the ground. Don’t climb anything in the first pass. From the ground, you can usually identify the major issues that need immediate attention versus the things that can wait for a proper inspection.

What you’re looking for in the ground-level walk:

Visible separated or hanging gutter sections. Gutters that have pulled completely away from the house. Downed branches resting on or having struck gutters. Visible damage to fascia, soffit, or siding from impact. Standing water near the foundation that suggests drainage failure. Major roof damage (missing shingles, exposed felt, visible holes) that’s likely affecting gutter performance.

Anything in this category that’s actively causing water intrusion needs immediate attention. Anything else can wait until you can get a proper estimate.

What metro Atlanta storms typically do to gutters

Different storm types produce different damage patterns. Knowing what to look for after each type helps you target the inspection.

Summer thunderstorms (high-intensity, short-duration): The damage pattern is usually overflow, not structural. Peak rainfall rates exceed gutter capacity, especially on compromised systems. Look for: streaking on siding below gutter sections, fresh erosion in landscaping along foundation lines, water pooling in areas it usually doesn’t. Structural damage from summer storms is less common but happens when wind exceeds 50–60 mph.

Severe wind events (high wind without tornado warning): Damage is often to fascia, soffit, and gutter attachments. Look for: gutter sections sagging or visibly displaced, dented or bent gutter material from debris impact, downspouts disconnected at the bottom or pulled from the wall. Loose-looking gutters after a wind event need closer inspection — the fastener system may have been compromised even if the sections still appear to be in place.

Tornado events (warned and confirmed): If a tornado actually touched down near your property, gutters are usually the least of your worries — roof damage and structural issues take precedence. But if the system survived a near miss with significant wind, treat it as a severe wind event and inspect carefully.

Hail events (less common in metro Atlanta but they happen): Look for: dented gutter material on the top edges and the front face, dented or holed downspouts, dented metal flashing around the roofline. Hail damage may not affect immediate function but can compromise the warranty on relatively new gutter systems and is worth documenting for insurance.

Ice storms (occasional in metro Atlanta winters): The damage from ice is mechanical — weight. Ice accumulating in gutters can exceed the load the system was designed for. Look for: sagging gutter sections after the ice has melted, separated seams, fasteners pulled from fascia, gutters that have rotated forward away from the house. Ice damage is often invisible during the storm and only becomes apparent in the days after as ice melts and the deformed system reveals itself.

Remnant tropical systems (occasional Gulf or Atlantic systems that push rain through metro Atlanta): The damage pattern is similar to summer thunderstorms but extended over multiple days — sustained heavy rain rather than a single intense burst. Look for: prolonged overflow that’s saturated foundation soil, persistent water staining on siding, drainage discharge points overwhelmed by sustained volume.

The 7-day inspection: what to actually check

Once the immediate safety period has passed and any acute issues have been addressed, the proper inspection happens in the week after. Don’t skip this even if nothing obvious is visible from the ground.

  • Look up at every elevation. From the ground, in good light, scan the full length of every gutter run. Compare it to what you remember pre-storm. Look for: dips that weren’t there before, sections that are visibly out of alignment, debris piles that suggest recent accumulation.
  • Check fascia and soffit from the ground. Look for new staining, new gaps where gutters meet fascia, new visible damage to the trim or siding directly below gutter sections. Any new water staining post-storm suggests overflow occurred.
  • Watch the next rain event closely. This is the single most useful diagnostic. Walk the property during the next significant rain and watch how water moves. Are downspouts running clean? Are there any spots where water sheets over the front of the gutter instead of moving toward a downspout? Is anything dripping from places that didn’t drip before? If something has changed since pre-storm, that’s the lead you follow up on.
  • Check drainage discharge points. Where do your downspouts actually discharge? Whether it’s splash blocks, underground tie-ins, or extensions to daylight points, check the discharge points. Storms often dump enough debris that discharge gets blocked, water backs up, and the problem migrates back up the system over the following weeks.
  • Check the foundation perimeter. Walk slowly around the foundation looking for fresh erosion patterns, new soil settlement, new standing water in low spots. Storm-driven foundation moisture issues often don’t become visible inside the home for weeks or months — catching the signs outside, early, can prevent significant remediation work later.

When to call a contractor immediately

Some post-storm conditions need professional attention quickly, not after the next homeowner inspection. Call for an estimate within a few days if you see:

Major sections of gutter pulled away from the house or visibly hanging. Active water intrusion (water coming inside the home through soffit, fascia, or wall transitions). Downed tree limbs resting on or in gutters that you can’t safely remove. Significant roof damage above gutter lines that’s clearly affecting how the system handles water. Underground drainpipes overflowing or producing visible water in unusual places. Foundation moisture intrusion (damp basement, visible water on slab) following a storm event.

When you can probably wait

On the other hand, plenty of post-storm conditions can wait for the next scheduled gutter cleaning or routine maintenance:

Minor debris in gutters (this is normal after any significant rain or wind). One-time overflow during the storm itself that didn’t cause visible damage. Streaking on siding that’s minor and can be cleaned with the next exterior wash. A few dents in gutter material that don’t affect water flow. Downspouts disconnected at the bottom that can be re-seated without significant repair.

These are normal storm wear-and-tear items. They’re worth addressing eventually but they’re not emergencies.

Insurance considerations

Gutter damage from severe weather is sometimes covered by homeowner’s insurance, sometimes not. The general pattern: damage from a “sudden and accidental” event (a tree falling on the gutter, hail damage, wind damage exceeding policy thresholds) is often covered. Damage from gradual wear, deferred maintenance, or “wear and tear” is typically not covered.

A few things that help if you may need to make a claim:

  • Document everything immediately. Photos of damage, photos of the conditions during and immediately after the storm, dates of when damage first appeared. Insurance companies respond better to documentation than to descriptions weeks later.
  • Don’t do major repairs before the adjuster visits. If you suspect you’ll be filing a claim, hold off on more than emergency stabilization until the insurance company has documented the damage themselves.

  • Understand your deductible. Many gutter repair jobs are smaller than typical hurricane or wind deductibles. If the repair would cost less than your deductible, filing isn’t worth the time.

Storm damage to a maintained system is usually minor and recoverable. Storm damage to a deferred-maintenance system is often the final catastrophic failure of an already-compromised system.
