Why DIY Two-story Gutter Cleaning Goes Wrong

We get calls every year from homeowners who started a two-story cleaning themselves and stopped halfway through. The most common reasons:

• The ladder isn’t long enough, or it’s on uneven ground. A 20-foot ladder won’t safely reach 22-foot gutters — the rule is that you need to be standing four rungs below the top, with the ladder extending at least three feet above the contact point.
• Reaching too far sideways. Most ladder falls don’t happen because the ladder breaks. They happen because someone shifted their weight to reach an extra two feet of gutter rather than climbing down and moving the ladder.
• Underestimating the debris weight. Two-story gutters that haven’t been cleaned in 18 months can hold a surprising amount of wet pine straw. Pulling a heavy scoop while balanced on a tall ladder is exactly the wrong place to be.
• No way to check the work. From the ground, you can’t see whether you actually flushed the downspouts clear or just scooped the visible debris. Most DIY two-story cleanings leave the downspout clogs in place.
